About the Company
St. John’s Casket Company is a lifestyle brand that recognizes death as one of only a few truly universal experiences, supports green burial as a cultural movement, and celebrates Gothic subculture in modern life. Original art, music, and narrative forms are implemented to create an immersive world based on our human fascination with, and fear of, death and the occult.
In 1993, a series of vivid and powerful dreams and visions led artist and designer Hugh Meade to first conceive of what was to become a decades-long personal Memento Mori project. Dreams that all centered on a 19th century coffin maker (Jasper St. John) and the company he founded (St. John's Casket Company). These dreams were populated by all manner of people and creatures, but they especially featured a kind of gathered family of outcasts, orphans, and misfits who all had some connection to this strange and morbid company, and the curious community it continues to serve.
Working with other artists and creatives, the company produces artifacts, art, and experiences related to Death and Occult practices as a way of exploring these often taboo subjects.
